Another Example of the MSM Used Against the West

The following post is by Tom Gross for National Review’s excellent media blog. The first part, referring to Ahmed Yousef’s op-ed in The New York Times and Washington Post, is a perfect example of how Arab terrorist leaders use our own media to lessen the West’s willingness to do what is necessary to defeat them. Bin Laden and Hassan Nasrallah do likewise, albeit rather crudely. More subtle means include cultivating self-censorship and access journalism among Western reporters, or having those who support Jihad against the West pose as journalists for international news agencies (see Abul Taher and Dilpasier Aslam, or, of course, Talal Abu Rahmah).

The second piece of the post, about the threats of new Qassams, highlights the ridiculousness of those who call for Israel to negotiate with Hamas. While the rockets remain inaccurate, sometimes flying backward or falling back into Gaza, Hamas has managed to smuggle vast amounts of first-rate explosives and weapons into Gaza.

NY TIMES AND WASHINGTON POST “COMMENT WRITER” THREATENS TO KILL ISRAELIS

In June, I wrote an item about how Ahmed Yousef, senior advisor to deposed Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, had become the new darling of the comment editors at The New York Times, Washington Post, and the NY Times-owned International Herald Tribune.

He fooled the Times and the Post into running the same piece of propaganda masquerading as an op-ed on the same day.

(See: Congratulations Hamas: Getting an opinion piece into the NY Times and Washington Post on the same day is unprecedented:http://media.nationalreview.com/post/?q=ZGU2Y2JmYjhhYWQ3MGJkZTFmZWUyYTIyOWMzYjQ4ZjA=

Now we read of Ahmed Yousef yesterday:

Ahead of summit, Hamas threatens to make deadlier Qassam rockets

Hamas can make the rockets it fires at Israel much deadlier by packing them with more explosives, a senior official in the Islamic militant group said in a statement.

The official, Ahmed Yousef, made the threat just two days before the start of a U.S.-hosted Middle East peace conference in Annapolis, Maryland.

Israeli officials have warned that Hamas may try to disrupt the conference with more intense rocket fire. Gaza militants, including Hamas members, have fired hundreds of crude, homemade rockets at Israeli border communities in recent years, killing 12 people and disrupting life along the border.

In a statement sent to reporters, Yousef said that the rockets currently being fired have limited effect because they don’t carry lethal enough warheads.

“They can be developed in a short period to create sufficient terror and fear and make the Israelis live in pain no less than what our people live through because of the repeated incursions into our villages and cities in the West Bank and Gaza,” wrote Yousef, an adviser to deposed Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniyeh.

  1. [...] Check it out! While looking through the blogosphere we stumbled on an interesting post today. Here’s a quick excerpt The following post is by Tom Gross for National Review’s excellent media blog. Note the claim that the Hamas and other Arab factions have to use their rockets against Israel because Israel did this or that offense to them. I’m reading a book now about the massacres of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire [Yves Ternon, Les Armeniens]. He shows how Sultan Abdul-Hamid over and over accused the Armenians of committing massacres against Muslims, against Turks, against Kurds, of attacking the govt, plotting revolution, etc. These charges against the Armenians were meant to justify his own persecutions/massacres of them.

Seems to me that Ahmed Yousef is doing the same thing, accusing the Israelis of committing crimes against his people when in fact the Arabs started committing massacres against Jews in Israel back in 1920, with British encouragement to be sure. A whole series of Arab pogroms and massacres of Jews started then. But then too the Mufti and his gang made false charges against Jews.

This whole syndrome is extremely dangerous. The Communists won in Vietnam by subverting and exploiting the Western press; and they weren’t even trying very hard. The Islamists (and other Third World gangsters) are much more aware of the circumstances; they have been fighting the “press war” from the start.

They buy off or intimidate media in their own spheres, they subvert, co-opt, intimidate, and possibly bribe world media. They deliberately provoke civilian deaths.

The Western doctrine of “freedom of the press” and of absolute separation of press and state makes it very awkward for Western governments to do anything about it. One can imagine the outcry if the U.S. government bought friendly coverage in Arab-language media, or if the U.S. authorities in Iraq monitored all reporters’ dispatches, expelling those who relayed jihadi hoaxes, or insisted on vetting all reporters’ translators and escorts.

(France would have no trouble, but the French government has been part of the problem; including French state-owned media, as readers of this blog know only too well.)

I don’t see an obvious answer. Blogs are helping (e.g. Mike Yon), but what happens when the Bad Guys start flooding the blogosphere with hired mouthpieces?

Some observers say that a large part of our current intellectual and cultural problems (such as deconstructionism) can be traced back to the deliberate campaign of cultural subversion mounted by Soviet-directed Communist intellectuals in the 1930s.

The Reds were fairly crude. The current gangsters are much cleverer, and some have lots of money to buy into western media and academies. How much damage will they do?
