Why is Europe Dying Demographically? Check out this Ad

Here’s an ad that sums up all the elements of a “friction-free” self-indulgent world created by modern freedom without discipline.

Patient love, self-sacrifice, genuine affection… none of this registers. No wonder Europeans don’t reproduce much. It’s such a… bother.

Now on the other hand, the people who produce many kids don’t hesitate to smack the little creep. Neither side has the patience for the extraordinary patience it takes to raise a child in an integrity-guilt culture where the product is an autonomous individual who chooses responsible behavior rather than acts out of fear.

PS. I’m suspicious of this ad. The kid does not strike me as French (bad accent and he says “la bonbon” rather than “le” or “les”); although the father is a perfect replica of the narcissistic hippies I knew in the early 70s.

This is a rather old advertisement. I have seen this ad at least five years ago. That daddy rather looks German to me.

In some sense, this is a very clever advertisement (from the viewpoint of the condom company). On the other hand, from a deeper point of view, this is extremely disturbing, and I agree, that this ad perfectly sums up what’s wrong with the West today (not just Europe). Children are not a source of pride anymore but a chore. Any society with this attitude won’t last long. And dare I say rightfully. The question is what’s the source of this phenomenon. I can think of two good (short) reads about this:

Where have all the children Gone

Richard, this is supposed to be an ad and to be humorous. I do not think that it portrays a general point of view on life. French ads are often made in this fashion, with lots of “second degré”, i.e. they must not be understood literally. By the way, a little search on youtube shows that the agency who made the ad is belgian, not french.

  3. Michelle Schatzman says:

Not that I would praise the father, or praise my memory of how I would react when this happened (I was not patient at all, I must admit). But almost everybody in Europe agrees that if you raise kids, you must do better than that. Re. the natality rate, France is not the worst, far from it. It is more the formerly prolific countries, such as Spain or Italy, or even Germany, whose natality rate went down to 1. something per woman, something being between 0.2 and 0.5.

If you look at the US, with few exceptions driven by ideology or religion, the middle class limits births and the lower class compensates, so that the natality rate of the US is quite high. But a second question comes up immediately : how do they raise their children once they are born? How much drug, how much father’s presence, how much education?

  4. SE says:

MS, Richard once discussed an article in Time magazine which reported that France had the highest birthrate in Europe — 1.8!

  5. Eliyahu says:

    off topic

I saw a recent piece by Melanie Philips confirming that British education has gone far down in quality. But if you want to get really scared, think of the Islamic bigot, Farouk Hosni, Egyptian minister of “culture,” who is slated to become the next head of UNESCO. Dear Hosni confirms your worst suspicions about Egyptian cultural commissars. Elie Wiesel, Claude Lanzmann, and Bernard-Henri Levi put a petition about him in LeMOnde. Read about the next UNESCO honcho [in Il Foglio in Italian translation].

This is an ominous sign of the death of civilization. Not Western civilization but civilization as such.

“they raise their children?” Non, non. It is now the job of the State in the 21st Century.
Parents have to have their Quality Time in this day and age. Imagine still having to temper that earth moving moment with years of drudgery.

  7. Cynic says:

Brazil has a perfectly good person for the job but is voting for the bigot because of political interests.
Talk about selling one’s birth-right for a mess of pottage.

kill education and you kill civilization. it used to be the difference between western and islamic society. no more: they are now converging.

if i am not mistaken, israel has agreed to this idiot being the UNESCO chief to appease mubarak, so why blame brazil?

I’ve seen this video before. I think that the ad is actually Italian. The mispronunciation may be because the kid is so small and is screaming the word. As for looks, the father, though fair, could easily be Italian.

Yes. And also don’t forget that something like 10% Islamic population. Mullah Krekar’s (AFAIR was kicked out from Norway) timeless words come to my mind.

    ——— excerpt starts ——————

“We’re the ones who will change you,” Krekar told Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet in his first interview since an uproar broke out over cartoons deemed offensive to Muslims.

“Just look at the development within Europe, where the number of Muslims is expanding like mosquitoes,” Krekar said. “Every western woman in the EU is producing an average of 1.4 children. Every Muslim woman in the same countries are producing 3.5 children.

“By 2050, 30 percent of the population in Europe will be Muslim.”

He claimed that “our way of thinking… will prove more powerful than yours.”

Yes, and Mark Steyn was taken to court in Canada by the Huamn Rights organization for publishing that statement.
    Hmph!

    oao,

Not blaming Brazil. Just pointing out how crazy the world has become.
The Israelis haven’t learned anything either judging by the stupid decisions they make.
So they appeased Mubarak and as a consequence Mubarak kicked them in the butt!
    Bibi’s Speech

However, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said Netanyahu’s call for the Palestinians to recognize Israel as a Jewish state torpedoed the chance for peace.
“The call to recognize Israel as a Jewish state complicates things further and scuppers the possibilities for peace,” state news agency MENA quoted Mubarak as saying at a military ceremony. “No one will support this appeal in Egypt or elsewhere.”

    an inconvenient truth.

So they appeased Mubarak and as a consequence Mubarak kicked them in the butt!

but of course. what they have not learned is that if you make nice or appease, it’s preceived weakness and you’ll be pounded. like clockwork.

Not blaming Brazil. Just pointing out how crazy the world has become.

for which it’ll get what it deserves.

they should have learned the theory of the crazy state. it works so well for NK and iran.

    oao,

No doubt you have read this
    Men in Tights

    …..
We’ve got auto czars, energy czars, drug czars, urban czars, a compensation czar, even an internet czar — all unelected, not subject to Senate confirmation, and accountable only to the Emperor BHO II himself. Naturally, a few of the elderly senators have raised some polite objections about the transformation of the United States of America into Augustan Rome, but like the senators in The Robe, they’ll soon get used to taking orders from the Boss if they know what’s good for them …

The more diverse opinions I read the more I’m coming to one conclusion.

this was obviously predictable from before the election and throughout his so-called career. if affirmative action is bad in general, it certainly is disastruous for the presidency.

what do you think happens if you take a narcisstic nobody and you call him a god?

as to the political system, it always adapts. the notion that america is exceptional is just bs.

i’m sorry to say that this country gets what it deserves.
