Pallywood Sighting:

Simply Jews and Logical Skeptic have posted on an interesting story which illustrates both the Pallywood narrative (Israeli Goliath vs Palestinian David) and the alas too-ordinary MSM and NGO acceptance of these narratives.

Pallywood – Mohammad Badwan
The amazing life and deeds of Mohammed Badwan – The Human Shield

Imagine a Palestinian boy who, as any other boy, liked football, playing in the yard, taunting his sisters, catching flies, running away from the boring lessons at school, etc. All was well with Mohammed Badwan until the the black magic of the Israeli military drastically changed the life of the lad. Here is his picture – during the first encounter with IDF:

The first time the name of the youngster comes up in the Palestinian chronicles is an article on the Adalah site:

Most recently, on 15 April 2004, the Israeli military used Mohammed Badwan, a 12-year-old Palestinian boy from Biddo, West Bank as a human shield. Mohammed was taking part in a demonstration against the construction of The Wall in Biddo.

Not nice, agreed. But obviously the boy made a lasting impression on the Zionist aggressors, because a week barely passed, and he is used again – and in the same capacity (but now he is an year older). Electronic Intifada knows the details:

According to the same sources, on 22nd April 2004, a 13 year old boy called Mohammed Said Essa Badwan/Badran was used as a human shield. Mohammed was peacefully taking part in spontaneous demonstration…
It becomes a habit with IDF (or with young Mohammed) apparently. Or, you can say, an innocent mistake in the date – nothing special.

But the amazing career of young Muhammad is only budding, just wait a bit. He is used again, now, according to Amnesty International report for 2005:

In April, Israeli soldiers used 13-year-old Muhammed Badwan as a “human shield” during a demonstration in the West Bank village of Biddu. The soldiers placed the boy on the hood of their jeep and tied him to the front windscreen to discourage Palestinian demonstrators from throwing stones in their direction.

Notice that he is still 13 years old. Again, it could be a clerical mistake, but the boy shows resilience and is highly reusable in his role of a human shield. This is probably why the Zionists decided to put him in some (hitherto secret) suspended animation machine. Apparently his age plays a critical role in their nefarious plans, since the next record of his appearance relates to 2007:

Palestinain children as young as 11 were used as human shields during an Israeli military invasion of Nablus in March 2007. 13 year-old Mohammad Badwan was tied by the arm to an Israeli military jeep…

It is Nablus now and three years later, but he is still 13 years old! And March of 2007 sees his return to Bidou in the same role. According to the Live Leak:

Israeli human rights activists have accused border police of using a 13-year-old Palestinian as a human shield. Rabbis for Human Rights say that Mohammed Badwan was tied by police to a jeep during a recent demonstration in the West Bank village of Bidou.

This was posted in March 2007 too. Surely our boy gets around. Besides, is it possible that he’s developed some affinity for a specific border police jeep? Because the picture used is usually the same, sometimes cropped and sometimes not.

And if you thought for a moment that the wretched semi-existence of Mohammad, which could be described as frozen – woken up – tied to a jeep – frozen again, has a happy end, you are mistaken, because he was activated again recently – in 2009, according to Pakistani Scandals:

This is what happened to a Palestinian child who joined Teenagers throwing stones at Israeli border police. Muhammad Badwan was grabbed by officers and tied by an arm to the grille covering the windscreen of their security vehicle. Last night the 13 year olds father said the police had illegally used his son as a human Shield to try to stop the demonstrators throwing stones at them.

There are more events with different dates where Muhammad participated, but I hope you have got the picture by now.

Great link Richard, the tone of it made me chuckle on this rainy afternoon.

  3. Michael says:

    Thanks for posting this.

Is there any evidence that young Muhammed was ever used at all as a human shield? is it possible that these are all retellings of an actual incident, or is the story 100% bogus?

tying a kid to a Jeep doesn’t sound like a normal IDF practice, and in the only picture he looks like he’s resting comfortably on a Jeep, not tied down against his will…

  4. Michael says:

BTW – you missed another sighting of Mohammad Badwan, according to StopTheWall.com as of July 2008 Mohammad Badwan was still from Biddu, but he is now 21

See final paragraph in the article below:

  5. Joanne says:

Never mind all that!! As a woman of a certain age, I want to know this boy’s secret! ASAP.

  6. Eliyahu says:

Joanne, the secret may be tana leaves used of old by the pharaohs. You know there are many mysteries concealed in the sands of the Middle East.

But Michael has even more astounding news!! The ageing process can also be sped up considerably. Consider that in 2004 Little Muhammad was 12 years old. However, according to Michael’s report, relayed from Stopthewall.org, he aged nine years in only four years of earth time.

What we need to do is to apply Science –oao, are you listening?– and bring back Dr Einstein and Buck Rogers as well as Mr Spock or even George Lucas to explain how normal earth ageing processes can be accelerated, perhaps by a giant proton accelerator, to bring that boy from 12 years of age to 20 in only four years. It may have to do with genetic proton displacement induced by the hydrogen bomb explosion in the Van Allen Belt in 1962 or by the Iranian reactor in Bushehr. How will Obama deal with this crisis??

  7. oao says:

What we need to do is to apply Science

but we’re running out of people who can and want to apply it.

I hate to ruin then festivities, but folks, for god’s sake, if and when we make such allegations, it is our duty to check and double check this, lest we come out looking like the ones we decry.

If this exposé on Badwan was supposed to be about the recycling of lies among the NGOs and anti-Israel crowd, then it comes short of achieving its goals.

The Amnesty International report of 2005 refers to April 2004 (not 2005 as inferred) when describing the Badwan incident.

The 2007 article in resist.ca also refers back:

13 year-old Mohammad Badwan was tied by the arm to an Israeli military jeepin Biddo in April 2004

The Liveleak text does not mention any dates, and 2007 is just the year when this clip was uploaded to liveleak, much like it is with youtube. In fact, having googled the exact phrase of the liveleak text, I found out that it was copied word to word from a 23 April, 2004 BBC report. This is already beyond all excusable sloppiness.

PakistaniScandals is not a news outlet, so its articles do not necessarily correspond with the actual date. Since it does not mention any dates as to the incident, there is barely any indication that even the
authors themselves attribute this incident to 2009.

If anything, this link would have been far more useful:

    http://stopthewall.org/latestnews/1703.shtml

A similar strategy targeting youth was employed in Biddu in order to halt the protests there in spring 2004. Diya’ Abd el Kareem Eid, 24 years old, was shot in the chest while eyewitnesses reported that during another protest undercover soldiers opened fire with live ammunition killing two Palestinians: Zakariya Salem-30 years old- from the nearby village of Beit Ijza, and Mohammad Rayan- 27 years old- from Beit Duqu, and critically injuring a third man, Mohammad Badwan- 21 years old- from Biddu who was shot in the head.

Here you have spring 2004 explicitly mentioned and not only has the boy aged by 8 years, but he was also shot in the head. (maybe by a palestinian sniper trying to hit the left Jeep?)

By now, I’m pretty mad! First, I’d expect those who had published it in the first place to do a slightly better job at it (I first saw it on Simply Jews a few months back, but only now decided to check the sources). Second I would expect Richard to check the sources before posting something that only does to impede his and his blog’s credibility.

The reason I’m so mad, is because just recently I tried to verify the origins of the claims in the infamous “Cool Facts about Israel” Video (and the sites making the same claims, and the inspired that video) and most of it turned out to be false, and unfortunately first degree ammunition for Israel bashers who are all up and about this farce on youtube. So by making sweeping accusations or claims, without having verified them thoroughly beforehand, we are only shooting ourselves in the foot.

And a final note. There appears to be some unanimous acceptance of the “Human Shield” scenario seen in the photo. I can understand why the NGO and the Pal. propaganda would argue so, but why on earth hasn’t anyone come up and gave a much simpler explanation to the situation, which simply depicts an arrested Pal. boy sitting on the Jeep’s hood (a rather likely place to put a detainee) and tied so that he would not escape. A friend of mine who used to serve in the Border Police (MAGAV) told me that this was standard procedure with adolescents caught rioting and throwing stones. They could not be arrested and detained for a long time, so the Jeep’s hood was the perfect place to put those kids while orders were received as to what to do with them.

  9. Eliyahu says:

sshender, the quote from liveleak says “a recent demonstration.” So if that quote was published in 2007, then liveleak wants readers to think that the incident occurred in that year. Furthermore, if the best that the defamers of Israel can do is to repeat the same story over and over, with or without the original date, then they want people to think that the offense that they attribute to Israel not only occurred to this Badwan boy in 2004 but is a regular, recurring offense. Hence, I do not criticize RL or the blogs that he refers as you do.

What is outrageous is the regular defamation of Israel by human rights watch and amnesty int’l. What bothers them is not the offense against human rights but Israel’s very existence. After all, they never attack the United States or Britain as they do Israel, although those powers have killed many local civilians in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, which a close reading of the daily press informs us of. Indeed, they sometimes do criticize the US & uk, but not in the same tones and with the same rhetorical hostility that they use against Israel. And they do so much less in the cases of US& UK. Can we really take the organized “human rights” movement seriously as being concerned over human rights and full of fairness, decency, and love for mankind?

Liveleak is not a news outlet. It’s a video sharing community like youtube, MetaCafe, and Dailymotion where the content is uploaded by individual users and its uploading time does not necessary correlate with the content of the video or its accompanying text. To imply otherwise, or use this “discrepancy” as proof is just plain dumb and betrays complete ignorance.

It took me precisely 5 seconds to pinpoint the text as a copy-paste of the BBC article which in fact corroborates the initial story. Having failed to have done the same, goes to show more about the authors than of their subject.

The same is true about the rest of the “entries”. I mean, I would have no problem if the argument was about the incessant usage of a single incident in an attempt to portray it as the norm. That’s legitimate. But the main point of this article, and the pompous “Pallywood” title implies that things were made up using the same boy, in many NONRELATED incidents. This of course is untrue. I’ve just shown how all of the reports basically tell the same story and refer to the same time and place, in spite of what the article tries to prove.

If Pallywood is staging of scenes for the gullible western media, than even if all those supposed discrepancies were in fact true, how does it make it so?!! There is no staging here – the photograph is authentic – and as I’ve just shown, no conspiracy to try to stretch a single incident into many. Just the worn out usage of it in their propaganda against Israel.

Any way you look at it, it’s not Pallywood, nor is it worthy of special attention. It’s just one more accusation among thousands which if you just spend minutes on google you can find thousands of the same kind – being repeated Ad nauseam on hundreds of anti-Israeli sites on the net.

I couldn’t agree more! But how is that relevant to the article above?!! You are kind of arguing a straw man here. The article was never purported to be an expose of the NGOs hypocrisy that you have decried so well. It sets out to drive across a completely different message – and fails miserably at it!
