Swallowing the Bitter Pill: A Comment from an Islamophobe

In my essay on Jew-Baiting in England I redefined Islamophobe as someone who is afraid to criticize Islam. Here’s a comment someone left me at the Second Draft on that post that illustrates the dynamics I described in the essay quite vividly.

Prof. Landes,
What an ill-mannered hysteric you are! How dare you malign this fair city, our Queen and country, you impudent neocon Yank! What you call “Jew-baiting” is principled opposition to the Crimes of Israel as detailed extensively in The Goldstone Report. There are 1,000,000,000 Muslims on the planet – what would the good professor have us do – incinerate them all? As far as “proportion” goes – Israel sits at the epicenter of the world’s troubles, and its murderous racism has a much more harmful impact than do similar atrocities in a backwater like the Sudan. YOUR fantasy, Sir, is that Israel is in fact NOT doing anything except lapping buttermilk and beehiving honey. The truth is a bitter pill to swallow, and dear fellow- you’d be well-advised to pour yourself a shot of castor oil when you drop the little capsule in your already wet mouth.

Ian Slade
London,UK

Let’s take it from the top.

What an ill-mannered hysteric you are! How dare you malign this fair city, our Queen and country, you impudent neocon Yank!

In short, you have dishonored us with your criticism. Nice honor-shame response.

What you call “Jew-baiting” is principled opposition to the Crimes of Israel as detailed extensively in The Goldstone Report.

I like the capital “C”, as well as the recourse to the pathetic Goldstone report as the touchstone of proof for Israel’s “Crimes.”

There are 1,000,000,000 Muslims on the planet – what would the good professor have us do – incinerate them all?

This is interesting. All I suggested was that “you” (2nd p. plural)/we criticize them. Maybe, as an inhabitant of the honor-shame realm, you understand how public criticism might feel like “incineration,” but where I come from even kids on the playground understand that “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.”

In any case, invoking the large number of Muslims as a reason to tread lightly illustrates my point about Islamophobia quite nicely.

As far as “proportion” goes – Israel sits at the epicenter of the world’s troubles, and its murderous racism has a much more harmful impact than do similar atrocities in a backwater like the Sudan.

That’s the key to why Islamophobes can ignore the genocide of millions why obsessing on the “crimes” of the Israelis: the Israelis piss off over a billion Muslims. Indeed, if we see how Muslims behave in Sudan, it’s a lesson on the dangers we run in the West if we get on their wrong side by, say, supporting their major enemy, Israel.

YOUR fantasy, Sir, is that Israel is in fact NOT doing anything except lapping buttermilk and beehiving honey

Actually, I do think that Israelis produce and consume “milk and honey,” but they also defend themselves. Aye and there’s the rub for Mr. Slade. To defend the simple desire to “be free in our land” as the Israeli national anthem runs, actually does really annoy the “honor-shame” Muslim world for whom the subjection of the infidel is a necessary component of their sense of honor. By assaulting me (and beyond me Israel) for annoying the Muslims, Mr. Slade has actually illustrated his willingness to submit to Muslim demands. These are the rantings of a frightened Dhimmi.

The truth is a bitter pill to swallow, and dear fellow- you’d be well-advised to pour yourself a shot of castor oil when you drop the little capsule in your already wet mouth.

The bitter red pill here, Mr. Slade, is that you are as much a target of Islamist resentment and contempt as those Jews and Israelis whom you’re ready to toss into the maw of their violent insecurities. You just come second.

What was Churchill’s definition of appeasement? You’re hoping somehow you won’t be around when the crocodile gets to England?

But unlike the crocodile, which eventually can be sated, nothing will sate the appetite for submitting the whole world to Sharia: insecurity is a bottomless pit.

And the signal for your demise is precisely the moment when, in your crazed fear, you sacrifice Israel is the misguided belief that, somehow, that will avert the hostility of the global Jihadis from you.

On the contrary, my dear fellow infidel, you will have just thrown explosives on the forest fire.

Try criticizing instead. It may initially get violent reactions, but in the long run, nothing throws water on the flames quite like firm and calm opposition. Good luck with that.

There used to be a time when I made a point of riposting to every such ignorant, unreasoned and emotional rant. But there are now so many of them and there is so little capacity and willingness to exist denial and try to comprehend the critique, that it’s a humongous waste of time.

I rest in the satisfaction (admittedly, sad) that these idiots will get what they deserve. The thing is even then they may not see it.

Just to point out the obvious. Speaking of principled opposition doesn’t mesh well at all with the later explanation that Israel is so much more important than Sudan.

Pakistan: Hindu boy drinks from water cooler near mosque; outraged Muslims drive Hindus into cattle pen

Local tribesman, who hold a good clout in the area, thrashed several Hindus forcing them to run away and take shelter in a near by cattle pen, The News reports. “All hell broke loose when my son, Dinesh, who looked after chickens in a farm, drank water from a cooler outside a mosque. Upon seeing him do that, the people of the area started beating him up,” said Meerumal, a resident of the area. “Later, around 150 tribesmen attacked us, injuring seven of our people, who were taken to the Jinnah Hospital,” he added.

One of the injured, Heera, said that another 400 families of the area were also being threatened to leave their households and settle elsewhere. “Our people are even scared of going out of their houses. We are also putting up with living in the filthy pen because we cannot go home for fear of being killed,” Heera said.

Where will Mr. Slade take cover, if he hasn’t already converted, in Bush House or Buckingham Palace?

  11. incognito says:

    Cynic,

Stop that jewish propaganda. These things never happen because, as Erdogan told us, muslims are incapable of murder.

You are trying to distract the world from the genocide that Israel is inflicting on the pals, and their control of the world.

  12. Daniel Bielak says:

    Professor Landes,

Please stop being so timid and appeasingly “universalist” and overly generous about people such as that commenter.

People such as that commenter are not primarily motivated by fear of genocidally anti-Jewish political movements – which the current huge one today is the modern Islamic-SUpremacist political movement.

People such as that commenter are primarily motivated by bigoted antipathetic views that they hold about, and antipathy that they feel toward the country of the Jewish people.

They have been brainwashed by the sea and tsunami of lies – the overwhelming propaganda – about the situation that vilifies Israel and that obfuscates the reality of the situation and that utterly falsifies the factual history of the situation – the 90 year intendedly genocidal Islamic-Supremacist and Arab supremacist, and colluding Western (mainly European (mainly British)), military, diplomatic, terroristic, and propagandic war against the country of the Jewish people.

People such as the commenter are blinded by the bigotry towards Israel.

The number of people in Western countries who hold the bigoted wrong views about the situation that that commenter does is huge, and includes leaders of governments of Western countries. THe reason that the number of people who hold those bigoted wrong views is huge is because because of the mass-indoctrination with lies – which made possible because of, and whould not be possible without – the utter lack of honest, accurate, clear verbal defense – speach – public relations – diplomacy – by Israeli government officials.

Israeli government officials need to realize that the war that is being waged against Israel, and which is a war that the government of Israel needs to fight against, is not mainly a physical war. It is a war of communication.

ISraeli leaders need to destroy the false narrative about the history and current reality of the situation.

Israeli leaders need to stop falsely confessing and stop appeasing and stop aiding and colluding with the racist genocidal leaders of the racist genocidally anti-Jewish anti-Israeli political organizations Fatah-PLO-PalestinianAuthority and Hamas.

Israeli leaders have been falsely confessing and acting with delusional harmful appeasing actions and have been aiding and colluding the racist genocidal leaders of the racist genocidally anti-Jewish anti-Israeli political organizations Fatah-PLO-PalestinianAuthority and Hamas.

Israeli leaders have been doing so do appeasingly – out their having internalized the lies about the history and current reality of the situation, out of timidity toward the bigoted ignorant craven anti-Israeli Western leaders – and out of, involved with that, wrongly placed compassion toward the several million of descendants of the 400,000 to 700,000 Arab refugees from the 1948 Muslim Arab genocidal attack on Israel (which caused 800,000 to 1,000,000 Jewish refuges from Muslim countries in the Middle East) and the Jordanian Arab people in Judea Sameria – who are now called the “Palestinian” Arab people.

  13. Walter Sobchak says:

“Israel sits at the epicenter of the world’s troubles”

Only in the deluded minds of anti-Semites everywhere.

If every trace of Israel were to disappear tonight, would the world have any fewer troubles tomorrow. Would the insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan end? How about AIDS, malaria and poverty in Africa? Or the drug wars in Mexico and Columbia?

Just asking the questions answers them.

    Dear Professor,
Your response is heartening. It takes some patience and poise to unravel a rant such as Mr.Slade’s, as well as a high degree of belief in the use and potential of deliberate judgement, and reason, for bringing such a convulsive and fearful declaration as this to a more hopeful context. As always, thanks.

  17. Diane says:

I find myself mulling this psycho-political question: At what point does Western enlightened moral relativism collapse in the face of naked hostility toward its very essence?

In our current age of jihadi terror, with its overt goal of Muslim world domination well documented and clearly articulated by Islamist leaders, with the 9/11 attacks nearly a decade behind us, we seemingly are still miles from that tipping point.

In the run-up to WWII, American progressives made many excuses for Nazi ambitions. But after Pearl Harbor — that era’s 9/11 — the excuses ended, and America went into combat mode. No more self-doubt about the rightness of our cause.

What will it take for present-day progressives to stop making excuses for the inexcusable and to take up the defense of our way of life without shame or self-doubt? A dirty bomb in Yankee Stadium? A nuke over Tel Aviv? Or have we postmoderns completely lost the ability to identify an enemy even as his guns are firing in our faces?

  18. Cynic says:

    Diane,

At what point does Western enlightened moral relativism collapse in the face of naked hostility toward its very essence?

  19. incognito says:

What will it take for present-day progressives to stop making excuses for the inexcusable and to take up the defense of our way of life without shame or self-doubt?

Life under sharia. You can readily infer this from what it took to take Hitler seriously and when did the world start to fight.

I suggest you read Prof. Aumann’s article on the blackmailer paradox. It explains both WW2 and current western behavior. Except I am not sure this time there will be a war, as the attack is from inside — both self-made and via 5th column.

  20. Eliyahu says:

But Incog, the 5th column was deliberately brought in by Western politicians, giscard d’estaing, tony blair, etc.

  21. incognito says:

    Eliyahu,

    I covered that in self-made.

But I really don’t think that europe intended for the current consequences when they accepted the muslim immigration.

Their reasons were cheap labor in the face of dying demographics, guilt and obligations due to colonialism.
After all, you don’t believe that their racism ended with colonialism, do you?

So yes, the immigration was intentional. But no, they were oblivious to the consequences they face today.

  22. Eliyahu says:

Well, the Euros have long considered themselves intellectually superior to everybody else, including their American patrons [and backstabbers]. But sometimes the guy who thinks that he is super clever winds up by being taken in by the apparent dummy. Aesop or LaFontaine or somebody probably has a fable about how the dummies outsmart the “smarties.”

  23. Diane says:

Thanks for pointing me to the blackmailer’s paradox. It explains Israel’s position vis a vis the neverending and hopeless “peace process,” but I don’t see how it explains American progressives’ stance. Are you saying that America and Radical Islam are the two men in the room, and America is willing to take just 10 percent to make the whole problem go away?

I think there is something deeper going on than a kind of weak-kneed pragmatism (something is better than nothing). I think there is a special kind of self-doubt and self-loathing in the West today (absent in the Nazi era) that makes us (some of us, anyway) wish for our own defeat. (I think Ernest Sternberg’s recent article “Purifying the World: What the New Radical ideology Stands For” gets at it.)

You say life under Sharia will be the tipping point, at which the West comes to its senses. But why? If enough of us loathe ourselves and our enlightenment values, why would dhimmitude change our minds? It is the punishment we deserve for the sins of colonialism, global capitalism, despoiling the earth, etc.

This is very different from a Neville Chamberlain, who simply wants to take 10 percent and call it a day.

  24. M Nagle says:

I would like to leave Britain. I think it’s too late for us now.

I detect a possible strain of satire in the letter that Richard Landes dissects above; I’m not sure anyone really talks like that in the UK – “fair city, Queen and country” – these are not phrases that spring naturally from the pen of a typical leftist pro-Palestinian, and neither is the mocking “Sir” – this guy writes as though he has a glass of port in one hand, and wears a monocle and a moustache. If Mr Slade is not a joker, he is a posturing pretentious oaf. In either case, he encapsulates perfectly the ignorant moral self-preening of so many Israel-haters here in London.

I work in a studio in Hackney; on walls around the neighbourhood are various items of graffiti – obscure messages, esoteric images, and here and there the slogan “Free Palestine”. Lazy and fashionable, meaningless, ignorant, and fatuously incongruous.

I’ve had enough. The UK is going to die, and I’d like to leave. The crocodile is much nearer than people realise. Or rather, the crocodile is so close, so unavoidable now, that we hardly dare mention it in polite conversation. If we’re going to be angry at anyone about the fact that we have a crocodile threatening our quiet lazy lives, it’s not going to be the crocodile, it’s going to be anyone who gets the crocodile agitated.

  25. incognito says:

but I don’t see how it explains American progressives’ stance.

Sure it does, it is a rather general theory, but it does not always apply obviously. The key idea is that one side appears as thoroughly committed to its goals and will do anything to achieve them, while the other side just wants to avoid conflict at all cost. If you think that way, do you see how it explains?

Are you saying that America and Radical Islam are the two men in the room, and America is willing to take just 10 percent to make the whole problem go away?

Indeed. America as a power has collapsed: it is decadent, bankrupt, utterly corrupted in its public and private institutions and a kleptocracy, with its educational system destroyed and the population ignorant, unable to reason and apathetic (pls, no tea party crap). So it operates by the illusion of power, the way Britain and France have been operating ever since they lost theirs. They are facing implacable enemies in jihadists and radicals who smell the weakness and pound and fool.

I think there is a special kind of self-doubt and self-loathing in the West today (absent in the Nazi era) that makes us (some of us, anyway) wish for our own defeat.

Precisely. Self-doubt is exactly what Aumann says one side muct reveal in order for the paradox to work. We’re not talking about pragmatism here, but one side exploiting the weakness of the other, which wants to avoid any conflict at all cost because of self-doubt.

You say life under Sharia will be the tipping point, at which the West comes to its senses. But why?

It depends how you interpret my tipping-point. What I mean by it is just realization of what has been lost given life under sharia, or at least dominated by muslims. That will force a comparison which will not fail to induce a 2nd thought on western civilization. What it does not necessarily mean is fighting back, because it may not be possible while subjugated and terrorized and weak.

This is very different from a Neville Chamberlain, who simply wants to take 10 percent and call it a day.

It is not!!! The blackmailer who gets 90% will want 100% and if the blackmailed only fools himself that 10% will be the end of it and conflict will be avoided. This is how goals and perceptions thereof work to produce the paradox.

  26. incognito says:

he encapsulates perfectly the ignorant moral self-preening of so many Israel-haters here in London.

Others has shown here that under the veneer of self-preening there is bending, ass in the air.

I’ve had enough. The UK is going to die, and I’d like to leave.

    It has died already.

I would like to leave Britain. I think it’s too late for us now.

It’s a tough move, but a survival one, both psychologically and physically.

  27. Daphne Anson says:

This sneering chap reminds me of a fellow I encountered at a private dinner in a posh London gentleman’s club in 2007. An officer in Britain’s Senior Service, no less (that’s the Royal Navy to the uniniated – the force that used to rule the waves), he was spewing venom over the capture by Iran of 15 Royal Naval personnel who had sailed too close to Iranian waters. But his venom was not directed at Iran. Not a bit of it. It was reserved entirely for Israel – the cause of all the troubles in the Middle East, be bellowed (while tucking into his plate of pork) – and the reason that Muslims in the U.K. are so agitated. Cast off ties with Israel, he said, and British Muslims will calm down again.

  28. incognito says:

There is probably good reasons why anti-Israel proponents are coming out of the woodwork: the bandwagon effect.

1st, they sense America is weak and is dumping Israel.

2nd, they sense Iran is dangerous and must be appeased.

3rd, there is an irreversible crisis, at which time the jews are always scapegoated.

Many of these people have always been anti-Israel, except they used to shut up because it was not fashionable. Now it is.

    Remember Beinart?

  32. Joanne says:

Slade’s question as to whether Landes was for incinerating all one billion Muslims is a tip-off that he’s not dealing with a full deck. Talk about putting words in someone’s mouth!

Also, is Slade really suggesting that the lives of Sudanese are less valuable than those of Palestinians just because of the lack of political repercussions? Pretty ugly, that. And don’t get me started on his reference to Israel’s being guilty of “similar atrocities” as those in Sudan.

Why isn’t Sudan considered an “epicenter”? Shouldn’t the fact that 2 million have died there be enough to qualify it as a major hot spot?

  33. incognito says:

Slade’s question as to whether Landes was for incinerating all one billion Muslims is a tip-off that he’s not dealing with a full deck.

I guess his concern is if we can’t incinerate them, what the hell can we do to save our ass? And his conclusion is to expose our ass.

Also, is Slade really suggesting that the lives of Sudanese are less valuable than those of Palestinians just because of the lack of political repercussions?

Heh, heh, those anti-jewish moralists — they are really racists in all directions aside of their own.

  34. Eliyahu says:

Joanne, if look back at the massacres in Sudan going back to independence in 1956, then the number of those slaughtered is probably more like 3.5 to 4 million.

Check the entry on Sudan in the New Columbia Encyclopedia.

  35. N00man says:

“Ill-mannered hysteric”– that savors of old-school Palaeocon anti-semitism.
