Why is the peace settlement that’s so obvious, so elusive?

Well intentioned people like John Kerry cannot understand why it’s so hard to make peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis, despite the fact that “everyone knows” what the eventual settlement will be, and, in the opinion of one BBC reporter, “it could be solved with an email.”

Many, frustrated with the lack of movement towards so obvious and mutually beneficial a goal, tend to blame Israel. This includes not only hard-line anti-Israelis like Walt, Mearsheimer, and Carter, but also good liberals like the editors and op-ed writers at the NYT, Peter Beinart at Open Zion, and all the “pro-Israel, pro-peace” lobbyists at J-Street. Indeed, at the talk I gave at the Association of Isreal Studies last month, most of the objections centered on my changing the subject from the real problem, “the settlements.”

And, unquestionably, the Israelis are pretty reluctant to make the concessions these well-intentioned people urge upon them, often as thinly veiled threats in the form of eventual boycotts, divestments and sanctions. This reluctance, critics readily attribute to the irredentist desire of the religious zealots who have settled what they call Judea and Samaria and want to hold onto the them, which certainly is one factor, among a relatively small minority in Israel (certainly not an electoral majority).

What makes their arguments hold water with the larger population of Israelis, most of whom would be willing to give up the West Bank in exchange for peace, is the pervasive evidence that the Palestinians would use whatever territory they got not, as J-Street assures us, to build a peaceful nation of their own, but as a launching pad for further attacks… in other words the “Phased Plan” for the destruction of Israel, formally adopted by the PLO in 1974 (after the one stage destruction failed decisively), and never repealed (despite the Oslo “Peace Process” obligation to do so and the assurance of many journalists that they had done so).

To have an insight into what the evidence that Palestinian culture is pervasively hostile to any kind of peace with the Israelis that leaves them any piece of the land “from the river to the sea,” one needs above all to look at the culture of incitement that brainwashes Palestinian youth to hatred. And in addition to a formal “incitement index” established by the Israeli government, one can find good examples of the hate-mongering, genocidal discourse that passes for a Palestinian culture at Palestinian Media Watch.

For only the most recent example of this grotesque phenomenon, see below:

Little girls on PA TV:
Jews are the “most evil among creations,
barbaric monkeys, wretched pigs,”
condemned to “humiliation and hardship”

Note the language of “humiliation” which is the fate of all dhimmi, and which Israelis, by definition, and unacceptably, escape.

by Itamar Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik

Palestinian Authority TV continues to promote Islam-based hate speech and Antisemitism, voiced by little children. In this latest example, two sisters recited a poem that included the following demonization of Jews:

“You who murdered Allah’s pious prophets (i.e., Jews in Islamic tradition)
Oh, you who were brought up on spilling blood
You have been condemned to humiliation and hardship
Oh Sons of Zion, oh most evil among creations
Oh barbaric monkeys, wretched pigs.”

The poem also taught that Jerusalem is not for Jews, because Jerusalem “vomits” out the Jews who are said to be “filth” and “impure”:
“Jerusalem vomits from within it your impurity
Because Jerusalem, you impure ones, is pious, immaculate
And Jerusalem, you who are filth, is clean and pure.”

Palestinian Media Watch has documented previous examples of hate speech and Antisemitism voiced by children on official PA TV, including:

The following is the transcript of the poem recited by the little girls on the PA TV program Palestine This Morning:

PA TV reporter: “Let’s meet these girls who want to recite a short poem.”
Girl 1: “I do not fear the rifle because your throngs are in delusion and ignorant herds.
Jerusalem is my land, Jerusalem is my honor
Jerusalem is my days and my wildest dreams.
Oh, you who murdered Allah’s pious prophets (i.e., Jews in Islamic tradition)
Oh, you who were brought up on spilling blood
You have been condemned to humiliation and hardship.
Oh Sons of Zion, oh most evil among creations
Oh barbaric monkeys, wretched pigs
Girl 2: Jerusalem is not your den
Jerusalem opposes your throngs
Jerusalem vomits from within it your impurity
Because Jerusalem, you impure ones, is pious, immaculate
And Jerusalem, you who are filth, is clean and pure.
I do not fear barbarity.
As long as my heart is my Quran and my city
As long as I have my arm and my stones
As long as I am free and do not barter my cause
I will not fear your throngs
I will not fear the rifle.”

Your so right what you say.

The Palestinians’ plight is due to their own fanaticism, hatred, intolerance and intransigence.

The reason the Palestinians do not accept any peace offers, no matter how generous as Barak and Olmert tried to do.
The Palestinian fascists need to see the Israelis suffering (either through physical annihilation or demographic submission) in order to feel good with themselves. Any win-win solution to the conflict cannot satisfy them, because it would leave the Israelis happy too, and the Palestinians are not interested in becoming happy, they want to make the Jews suffer.

Just look how many streets the Palestinian Arabs have named for terrorists who murdered Israeli civilians.
The Palestinians have run out of streets and are now naming park benches after terrorists!

It amazes me that people on the left support these Palestinian murderers.
How hard it is for these people to go on Palmediawatch and see Abbas racist evil media against Jews?

Maybe the reality is, the left isn’t bothered when Abbas media glorifies the Sbarros Massacre, Disco Massacre, Passover Massacre, Munich Massacre, Maaalot massacre, 1978 Coastal Road massacre where Palestinian terrorists murdered 37 Israeli civilians.

Abbas honors terrorist Dalal Mughrabi, killer of 37
This week Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas once again honored the memory of the terrorist Dalal Mughrabi – this time by sponsoring a ceremony celebrating the 50th anniversary of her birth. Mughrabi led the worst terror attack in Israel’s history in 1978, when she and other terrorists hijacked a bus and killed 37 civilians. Present at the ceremony were Palestinian dignitaries and a children’s marching band. Earlier this year, Abbas sponsored a computer center named after Mughrabi. The PA further glorified Mughrabi on the date of her birth when the Governor of Ramallah announced the naming of the “Dalal Mughrabi Square”
These are the sadists that the left supports.

PA TV attacks PMW for calling planners of suicide bombings “terrorists”
PA TV host: “I want to tell the Israelis that our prisoners are heroes and not terrorists. What I saw reminded me of an Israeli website called “PMW” or “Palestinian Media Watch,” a site that monitors the Palestinian media. Of course every visit that we film for a prisoner gets them angry. I was surprised a week ago that [regarding] brother Ibrahim Hamed (54 life sentences), brother Abbas Al-Sayid (35 life sentences), and brother Abdallah Barghouti (67 life sentences), they [PMW] objected, they were upset, they slandered these heroes and claimed that they are terrorists. If they see Abdallah Barghouti as a terrorist, Abbas Al-Sayid as a terrorist, Ibrahim Hamed and Nasser Awais (14 life sentences), if they see all these prisoners as terrorists, we see them as heroes… I salute you, all you heroic fighter prisoners, and of course I always wish you freedom.”

Note: Abbas Al-Sayid – serving 35 life sentences for planning two suicide bombings, one in 2002 at a Passover dinner, killing 30 Israelis, and another in 2001, killing 5 and wounding 100.

Abdallah Barghouti – serving 67 life sentences for preparing explosives for terror attacks in which 66 Israelis were murdered – Sbarro restaurant (15 killed, Aug. 9, 2001), Moment Cafe (11 killed, March 9, 2002), and the triple attack at the Ben Yehuda pedestrian mall (11 killed, Dec. 1, 2001).

Ibrahim Hamed – Hamas military leader serving 54 life sentences for orchestrating suicide attacks that killed a total of 46 Israelis. These attacks included the bombings at the Hebrew University cafeteria (9 killed, July 31, 2002), Moment Cafe (12 killed, March 9, 2002), Hillel Cafe (7 killed, Sept. 9, 2003), Zion Square in the center of Jerusalem (11 killed, Dec. 1, 2001), and others.

Nasser Awais – serving 14 life sentences for planning terror attacks in which 13 civilians were murdered: 6 killed at a Bat-Mitzva celebration (Jan. 16, 2002), 2 killed in Jerusalem (Jan. 22, 2001), and the throwing of a hand grenade that killed a baby (March 9, 2002), and other attacks.

UK Parliament scrutinizes Palestinian hate incitement, terror glorification and British funding of PA in debate examining PMW findings

MP Ellman: “The matters… are truly shocking and put a question mark over the status of the Palestinian Authority as a partner for peace”

MP Henderson: “No peace agreement will be able to guarantee…peace if a generation of Palestinians is growing up indoctrinated to hate Israel, Jews and the West”

  3. Ken Kelso says:

It seems that after 5 decades of terror and murder against Israel.
The Palestinians might have realized that this campaign of terrorism and rejectionism has failed.

  4. Note the language of “humiliation” which is the fate of all dhimmi, and which Israelis, by definition, and unacceptably, escape.

If there is something that the videos from the Palestinian (and Islamist in general) mainstream are full of, then that is the honor-shame jargon:

(if the link does not show the video, click it again and it will, i don’t know why but it happens to me with MEMRI videos).

Egyptian Children Playact the Return of Saladin, Vow to Fight to the Death for the Liberation of Jerusalem

On minute 1:33 the Egyptian kid that plays the role of Saladin asks:

Why did you allow the Al Aqsa mosque to be violated? … How did you accept such a life of humiliation? … I left the Al-Aqsa Mosque in a lofty state. You gave it up to the impure ones.

Also, if in the Arabic language the term “violate” carries the same penetration connotations that it does in English, then that is one more honor-shame manifestation (the one who gets penetrated, usually women, can never have as much honor as the one who penetrates. If that is the case, the wording of the script about the violation of Al Aqusa mosque aims to shame the Muslims into genocidal action against those who violated the Islamic honor by violating the mosque – the filthy Jews)).

The hygiene vocabulary, too, is sometimes indicative of an honor-shame attitude (hence the “impure” Jews). In all cultures there is a concern with bodily hygiene. But i know that the Arabs are hypochondriac with it, and this could be an indication of the intensity of their honor-shame mindset.

And, as we just witnessed, the Palestinians might be the champions in brainwashing children with hate, but by no means are they the only Islamists to do so.

PS: The talk in the video about the army of Islam that will lead the world is the Caliphate vision (the Earth under sharia law) that western pundits assure us is just a minority view in Islam. I guess the pundits neither watch PMW or MEMRI, nor do they look at (Islamwashed) Pew polls that show hefty majorities of Muslims desiring to live under sharia law.

  5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ScBUVkvjFs&feature=player_embedded

    The kid recites the poem:

Allah created me… he made me prouder and made me a Palestinian, he made defiance flow like blood in my veins

Being constantly defiant is not genetic, it is learned. But the kids are continuously exposed to glorification of defiance so that they will become martyrdom-fodder in the quest to humiliate the Jews. The Pals take pride in turning their kids “hot-headed”:

On minute 0:57 the Palestinian girl explains that Palestinian youth is not like other youths, they are “hot-tempered and choose shahada (martyrdom)”.

They teach their kids to be intransigent (defiant, hot tempered) but the western intelligentsia informs us that it is the settlements that stand in the way to peace. If the Israelis leave the settlements then, somehow, as if by magic, the entrenched psychological habits that have been inculcated into the Palestinian children will disappear, they won’t be honor-shame minded any more, they won’t be defiant, hot-tempered and petulant against the Jews.

Now, the brainwashed Palestinian children are doing everything they can to make the western intelligentsia see the truth of the matter, i.e. that the conflict is not about land but about honor and religion. They even say that they prefer martyrdom to a state:

(minute 0:25, the anchor asks, the girl responds)

what is better, peace and full rights for the Palestinian people, or shahada (martyrdom)?

    And the intelligentsia responds:

“Nah, it’s just the settlements, dummy, the Palestinians only want the same things that we do, peace and a good future for their kids. And stop calling me cognitive egocentrist”.

  6. Since i started with honor-shame examples in the Islamist world, here is another one by Egyptian islamist Al-Sisi (before ousting Morsi):

    Minute 1:37

Let me ask you: How can we, the officers of the military, feel like real men, when we sense that the entire Egyptian people lives in fear and terror?

Funny, isn’t it? No concern for the fear of the Egyptian people, but only concern for the fact that this fear makes the Army officers feel less masculine.

Honor-shame mindsets and sexism go hand-in-hand.

  7. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwYtTg7EhvQ&feature=player_embedded

0:15 minute: Palestinian TV informs us that the imprisoned for murder Palestinian terrorist “brought honor to all humanity”.

0:25 minute: his mother let us know that the terrorist is honorable and a man.

How come? Because “he has never harmed his Muslim brother”, explains the mother. Infidels don’t count, if you caught the innuendo.

And his father declares himself proud for his son.

But i have to stop here, all this honor and pride and manhood just reminded me that i have to go and kill my neighbor who offended me yesterday.

Abbas has accepted that the Palestinians return to the negotiations table for tactical reasons, but still this is something that shames him in the eyes of the Arab Street whose sentiment is against Israel’s existence even West of the Green Line:

    I quote Dr Landes:

This helps us understand the difference between Hamas and Fatah. The only honorable public stance in the Arab world vis-à-vis Israel since 1948 has been the rejection of any contact with Israel that might legitimate it. The very “occupation” of the territories conquered in 1967 derives directly from this Arab refusal to recognize or even negotiate publicly with Israelis — the “Three No’s of Khartoum.”

Until 1967, Palestinian and Arab leaders refused even hypothetically (and in English) to grant publicly that Israel had a right to exist. Afterwards, with some prompting from PR advisors in the West, they toned down some of their genocidal rhetoric, but it was a long hard road to get them even in English to make even hypothetical concessions in public.

The Oslo process forced Arafat to at least mouth in English and in public his willingness to accept Israel’s existence. There was a formal statement – the signing and hand-shaking on the White House lawn – that publicly accepted (from the Arab point of view) a humiliating stance. With Sadat’s fate in mind, Arafat was quick to reassure his Arabic and Muslim public that he didn’t mean this – the Trojan Horse speech in South Africa only months after the White House ceremony, in which he assured his public that this was only a ruse.

From the honor-shame perspective, Arafat had shamefully accepted a public compromise even though it meant he could better launch the promised offensive… the staged assault.

So, right now the Palestinian leadership needs to save face by communicating to the Arab Street that the goal has not changed, that it is Israel’s destruction they are still seeking.

And what better way to do that than by once more glorifying Palestinian murderers:

Fatah honors arch-terrorist by proudly listing 61 of his murders

This should pass the message to the Palestinian public that all the talk about peace is just that, talks, Abbas does not really mean it.

And why not do that? It’s not like the West is going to draw any conclusions from this terror glorification. As Dr Landes put it in 2007:

As long as one could talk about occupied Palestine and mean “river to the sea,” there was no shame in letting eager cretins in the West believe that one meant the “Green line.”

Not much has changed since then.
